About This Role

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/08/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04. For the GS-06 position, you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. For the GS-07 position, you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: GS-05 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Maintain accurate timekeeping and attendance records following established procedures; Enter, update, and retrieve data in automated systems with attention to detail; - Provide routine customer service by responding to straightforward questions from staff and patients; Prepare simple correspondence, forms, and documents using standard office software; and File, scan, and organize documents in accordance with policy and record-keeping requirements. OR Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed 4 years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university. Note: (Transcripts are required) OR Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education. Equivalent combination of successfully completed post high school education (beyond the first 60 semester hours) and specialized experience which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. Note: (Transcripts are required.) GS-06 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Track, monitor, and reconcile data in automated systems, ensuring accuracy and compliance with policies; Coordinate and schedule meetings, and logistics for multiple staff or service areas; - Provide detailed customer service, resolving routine problems and escalating issues appropriately; Draw, review, and edit a variety of administrative documents, reports, and spreadsheets and Maintain and update service-level tracking tools, performance metrics, or workload reports. GS-07 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Interpret and apply administrative regulations, policies, or procedural guidance to advise staff and ensure compliance; Analyze data to identify trends, discrepancies, or process improvements, and prepare summary reports for leadership; - Coordinate complex administrative functions for a service line, including managing deadlines, tracking actions, and ensuring follow-through; Prepare high-level correspondence, briefing materials, and reports with minimal supervision, and Provide training or guidance to new staff on administrative procedures and system navigation. The Program Support Assistant position is located in the Inpatient Nursing Service (INS) of the Associate Director of Patient Care Services Office at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas. This position will serve as the Administrative Support/Program Support and performs work of a clinical office support nature, which encompasses a variety of different duties and responsibilities and services several inpatient nursing units.
