How to Get a Job in Germany in 2026 - Visa, Salary & English-Speaking Jobs

Germany Is Actively Recruiting International Talent

Germany faces one of the most severe skilled worker shortages in its history - a deficit of over 1 million qualified workers. In 2024, Germany introduced the Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) and significantly liberalised its Skilled Immigration Act. The country needs talent and has made immigration easier than at any point in its modern history.

The EU Blue Card - Your Fast Track to Germany

The EU Blue Card is the primary pathway for non-EU skilled professionals. Requirements:

  • A recognized university degree (WES or similar evaluation may be needed)
  • A job offer with a minimum annual salary of approximately €45,300 (shortage occupations: €41,041)
  • The job must match your qualification

Processing time: 3-8 weeks. Once approved, you can bring family members (spouse gets immediate work permit, no waiting period). After 21 months (or 33 months with B1 German), you can apply for permanent residence. With C1 German and 21 months: permanent residence immediately.

The Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) - New in 2024

Germany introduced a revolutionary "points-based visa" that lets you come to Germany to search for a job - without having one first. Points from: education level, German language skills, work experience, age, prior Germany connection. You can stay for 12 months to find employment.

English-Speaking Jobs in Germany

While German is required for most roles, thousands of English-only positions exist - especially in:

  • Berlin tech startups: Companies like Zalando, Delivery Hero, N26, HelloFresh, Trade Republic all work primarily in English
  • Munich (BMW, Siemens, MAN): International engineering roles, English-friendly environments
  • Frankfurt (finance): Deutsche Bank, Deutsche BΓΆrse, many international banks hiring English speakers
  • Hamburg (shipping, logistics): Hapag-Lloyd, KΓΌhne+Nagel
