About This Role

There is no education substitution for Time in Grade requirements. BASIC INDVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT (IOR) - GS-0018: A. Major study (Undergraduate and Graduate Education) -- safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology; OR B. Experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: managing safety or occupational health program elements, developing and recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management, applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements. These examples are not all inclusive. OR C. Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Health Physicist (CHP), or similar certification that included successful completion of a written examination. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: To qualify for the position (in addition to meeting the basic IOR requirement above), your resume must clearly describe specialized experience that demonstrates the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities as follows: To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of full-time specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal Service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized Experience must demonstrate all the following: Managing safety or occupational health program elements. Developing safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards. Experience in one or more environmental compliance related fields such as Air Quality; Water Quality; Hazardous Waste; Pollution Prevention; Solid Waste Management/Recycling; and spill response to complete tasks/projects. Reviewing safety and environmental standards, specifications, and plans of projects and collaborating with planners and designers to ensure compliance. Conducting site investigations, audits, and surveys and collaborating with customers and other organizations to resolve safety and environmental compliance concerns. Supporting development of and providing training to personnel for safety and environmental compliance. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time-In-Grade: Current career or career-conditional employees of the Federal government, or former career or career-conditional employees, who have a break in service of less than one year, are required to meet the time-in-grade restriction of one year of Federal experience at the next lower-grade, with few exceptions outlined in 5 CFR 300.603(b). Selective Placement Factor: This position requires a current, valid Driver's License. Failure to provide proof of such license will cause you to be rated ineligible for this position. Physical Demands: The incumbent commonly spends time traveling in the field to observe operational practices and frequently conducts surveys and inspections. The work in the field requires standing, walking, reaching, bending, and climbing ladders and stairs. The remainder of time is spent in mostly sedentary activity in an office setting. The work environment includes, but is not limited to, office settings, construction sites, drilling sites, recreation sites, as well as visits to limited access areas such as tunnels, pipelines, gate chambers, etc. Safety measures are observed, and protective clothing and equipment are often required. You must meet all Eligibility and Qualification requirements, including time-in-grade restrictions and any selective placement factors if applicable, by 05/27/2026.
