The role oversees both the Industrial Equipment Mechanic and Machinist units and requires a broad technical, supervisory, and administrative skillset. Below is a consolidated list of key responsibilities and knowledge areas for inclusion in the posting: Responsibilities: Supervise a team consisting of three Industrial Equipment Mechanics and one Machinist, including training, performance evaluations, competency documentation, and workload management. Oversee maintenance, repair, modification, and troubleshooting for a wide range of mechanical systems and equipment across the medical center campus. Manage maintenance service contracts as a Contracting Officer Representative (COR), including reviewing shop drawings, coordinating contractor activities, identifying latent conditions, and preparing required technical reports and cost estimates. Provide program management support, including developing cost estimates, conducting surveys, performing inspections, analyzing baseline data, and identifying system upgrades or replacement needs. Ensure compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC), NFPA, VA policies, local regulations, and all applicable engineering and safety standards. Review and comment on design drawings, participate in construction inspections, and support nonrecurring maintenance and minor projects as the subject matter expert. Lead daily work planning, scheduling, and adjustment of personnel assignments, including coordination with other departments to maintain workflow and reduce downtime. Maintain administrative responsibilities such as attendance records, leave approval, training plans, disciplinary actions, grievance resolution, safety compliance, and implementation of equipment management plans. Ensure strict adherence to information security, GEMS requirements, infection control procedures, and Environment of Care standards. Required Technical Knowledge The role requires extensive hands-on technical knowledge of diverse systems and equipment, including but not limited to: Commercial kitchen and canteen equipment, including industrial dishwashers and conveyor systems Underground storage and leak detection systems Medical gas systems, medical vacuum systems, air compressors, and air dryer systems Diesel- and gas-powered engines and electric vehicles Commercial janitorial equipment such as automatic floor scrubbers, buffers, pressure washers, and waste compactors Commercial street sweepers, tractors, lawn equipment, and electric pallet jacks, boom lifts, pneumatic tube systems, utility plant compressors, gates, and platforms Welding, machining, metal fabrication, and equipment rebuilding involving a wide range of metals and materials This position plays a critical role in ensuring the reliable operation of essential systems that directly support patient care and facility operations. The incumbent must demonstrate strong leadership, technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and familiarity with complex mechanical infrastructure across the 100-acre campus and its 1.5 million square feet of building space. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Employee will be required to work off of high ladders, scaffolds as occasionally necessary, as well as occasional heavy lifting and strenuous exertion. The employee is standing or walking most of the time and must be in very good overall physical condition. The incumbent will be fit tested for a respirator and is required to wear respiratory protection when working in contaminated areas, including asbestos-contaminated areas. The Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center is recruiting for one (1) Maintenance Supervisor in the Engineering Service. This supervisor is accountable for two separate occupational trades (Machinist and Industrial Equipment Mechanics with welding skills) at the journeyman level.
